Sculpture: Place and Space

Public art has long played a prominent role in Canberra’s cultural landscape. Over the past three decades, the ANU School of Art has played an important part in this development with its Sculpture Workshop, exhibitions and Visiting Artists in Residence.

An international Symposium TOUCH: Place and Space scheduled at NGA, May 10-12  will be presented by the ANU School of Art and Humanities Research Centre, RSHA, working in partnership and hosted by National Gallery of Australia Public Programs.

The Symposium will examine the work, the people and the conversation around sculpture in Canberra and set it in a national/international context. Themes will elaborate on issues raised in the exhibitions, the history with commissioned permanent and temporary work for public spaces, environmental considerations, community interaction with the wide range of contemporary sculpture activity and its role in the creation of urban spaces and stimulating public imagination.
The event is being held in conjunction with special exhibitions at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery and School of Art Gallery, various activities and events at ACT Galleries and Arts Centres, artists in residence, walks, talks and tours of sculpture collections on the ANU Campus and Sculpture Park and Canberra’s public sculpture collections.
